Visit from the Harringtons

We were delighted to get some special visitors this week as they were passing through town from Christmas in Michigan back home to Louisiana. The Harrington fam takes the prize (so far) for being the visitors from the farthest distance away to visit Troy. Mike and Courtney are good friends from his days at Troy, and now I refer to Courtney as my Facebook BFF, as she and I (used to, not so much lately!) chat all the time on there. Thanks for taking the time to stop by, Courtney and fam!

Three weeks old

Happy three week birthday to you, Troy! Here's some pictures I snapped along the way today. We celebrated with a morning trip to church to visit some of the staff and an afternoon trip to Meijer.

How it went

Well, last night seemed to be better than the nights before. Attribute it to the routine? Sure. He also ate a ton yesterday and was awake most of the day except for two long naps. So who knows. Here's what we actually did: bath at 8:30 (he screamed, despite the bedtime bath's claim that it would relax him), lotion, quiet awake time with daddy, eat, pray, bed at 9:30. We were only up twice in the middle of the night- the "long" stretch lasted just shy of 2 hours (instead of 3!) and the second time was at 5 this morning and he was right back to bed after a diaper and a quick meal.

And this is a picture of Troy this morning, just because he's so darn cute. He's knocked out and wearing a sleeper that says I love Mommy. Has since pulled the paci out of his mouth and is clutching it with his hand. Precious :)

the routine

No, not the "Geller Routine" from Friends, though that episode always makes me laugh!

I know he's shy of three weeks old and certainly too young for sleep training, but I figured, bare minimum, we have to start somewhere and that place is a nightly routine. Right now we've just been doing whatever, trying lots of different things, at different times. So until he's old enough to learn night from day, I figure we can at least implement something familiar to kick off the overnight every evening.

This is what we're starting with tonight: bath at 8:30, lotion, read, eat, pray, bed

Feedback is welcome... what do you think? This is going to be a work in progress I'm sure...

Christmas Weekend

Our first Christmas as a family was spent right here in Urbana. This was the first time I/we weren't in Chicago for Christmas, and we were happy to have some of our family join us at our house to celebrate the holiday. Mom, Dad, Andy and Daria (and Maggie the dog) all arrived on Christmas Eve and stayed until the morning of the 26th. We ventured out on Christmas Eve to go to one of the special Christmas services at church and stayed in eating awesome food and playing games the rest of the weekend. And it was a beautiful white Christmas!

Visitors

Here are some pics of some of Troy's first visitors. I apologize if I did not remember to snap your picture when you came to visit Troy for the first time!

Gramma and Grampa were there first!

Jenn came up to the hospital Friday afternoon.

Jill came back to visit us the day after we got home. Jill, you deserve a blog post all of your own!

Su brought us dinner right after we got home. Can't wait for Troy to meet his neighbor Liam!

Elissa got to meet Troy while he was under the bili lights.

Troy got some love from the Melby fam, too!
Thanks, everybody, for welcoming Troy into all your lives!

2 weeks old!

Happy 2 week birthday, Troy! It's hard to believe he's already two weeks old; I feel like we just got home from the hospital. But here we are, ready to celebrate his first Christmas just a couple short weeks into Troy's life.

Tidbits of info about Troy...
  • Sleeping- he's still trying to figure this one out. Daytime seems to be primo time for him to nap and then he loves being wide awake at night. However, the last two nights have been dramatically improved. Last night, we were only up twice in the middle of the night, and both times were right about an hour! Much, much better than those 3 hour stretches we were seeing last week! Let's pray for more of those nights in the weeks to come, Troy!
  • Eating- gone are the days (last week) that I had to wake Troy to eat! He's supposed to be eating every 2-3ish hours during the day (the more closer to 2, the better as he puts his weight back on) but he seems to eat even more frequently than that most often. This morning he ate 3 times in 2 hours!
  • Amusement- ah, if only it were as easy to entertain a 16 year old as it is a newborn. Just talking to Troy gets his eyes all wide, and he makes all kinds of fun faces. We've yet to touch a toy in our house (though I'm sure that won't last too long).
And of course some pictures for you! Happy 2 weeks to you, Troy!

I love when he passes out after he eats. I see this sweet face many times a day :)

    A whole bunch of firsts

It shouldn't surprise me that most things my little guy experiences in a day could be considered a "first" of some sort. Nevertheless, I want to record them so I remember a little about each of them.
    • First trip to church: Sunday, December 19. We went to second service since we had been up a whole bunch the night before. By the time we walked in the door, I already had a couple people following me while I semi-un-bundled Troy. He was treated like a little rock star the whole morning. He slept through the opening worship song (they're a bit loud, so I was wondering how he would react. Must be used to it from his time inside :) all the way through the first half of the message. I stepped out to feed him and came back by the second half of worship. I think my plan in future weeks (at least right now) is to go feed him during the message so I can be back for worship. We've got a great nursing room that streams everything that's happening in the auditorium.
    • First time I left him: Sunday, December 19. I left Troy (and a bottle) so I could go run a quick errand to Kohl's. I knew he was going to be well taken care of, but I couldn't help rushing a little to get back to my boys. Came home and everyone was sleeping.
    • First day alone/ my first outing with Troy: Monday, December 20. With Mom back at home until Christmas and Mike still at work, Troy and I had a day to ourselves. I had to take him to the pediatrician for a check up (We got the all clear! Troy put on weight over the weekend, 7 lbs 4 oz now, and his bili levels are down even further. Now they won't see us, unless we call, until our month check up!) and then we went to Meijer to pick up a couple things. After a quick meal in the pediatrician office, Troy passed out for our trip to the grocery store and I piled in the groceries around his carrier in the cart.
This is what Troy wore to his weigh-in today. I thought he matched so well with his car seat that I had to take a picture.

    Photo Shoot #2

After Troy's first photo shoot when he was two days old and we were on Christmas card crunch, I knew I wanted more pictures (LOTS more) soon of our little guy. Thanks, Carrie and Chris, for making it happen this afternoon!

Tonight's the TROY bowl game. We all (including Bear) put on our TROY apparel for the occasion.

    Gramma's Back!

Mom arrived to stay with us for a few days yesterday! It's so awesome to have her here, especially now that Mike is back at work. We're getting totally spoiled with good food, help around the house and especially with baby. Troy has decided he doesn't want to sleep at all between the hours of 1:30-4:30 at night (see blog post from October... I called it) so an extra set of hands during those hours is absolutely invaluable! Thanks for coming to stay, Mom!

In other news. we went back to the doctor today to have bilirubin levels and weight checked. Nobody told us in the hospital earlier this week that Troy's bili levels would probably rise again slightly after we left, so when the nurse checked and he was a point higher I got very worried. The doc came in and explained she wasn't concerned at all and that they always see a slight rise in the days after babies leave from being under the lights, since the lights bring it down so quickly. His weight has dropped further though (7 lbs 2.5 oz), so she wants me to feed him more often during the day and come back for a weight check tomorrow. However, Troy gave us his first big blow out explosive diaper right before the doctor today though, and I'm thinking that we'll definitely see his weight increase for tomorrow :)
