Growth Spurt

So I'm convinced baby is undergoing a growth spurt these last couple days. He or she is moving around a TON and I am way more uncomfortable than I've been recently. And its not the "its 90 degrees out" uncomfortable, its the "i'm growing a human and my body is working hard" all-around kind of uncomfortable. So I did what all first time expectant moms do when weird things start happening... googled it. And it looks like lots of women say they noticed a growth spurt happening around 20 weeks.

So even though I've been saying I think I'm further along than "they" say I am, maybe I really am 20 weeks right now? Moms and/or medical professional friends and fam...I trust you way more than google. What's up right now?

20 week update- halfway there!

Can't believe that we're another week closer to meeting baby! Each day seems to go by kind of slowly, especially as we wait to find out if we're having a boy or girl, but the weeks do pass by quickly (figure that one out!)
Baby is moving around a TON these days, with a combination of soft flutter kicks and some hard kicks that keep catching me off guard every time baby decides to take it up a notch :) With baby finally coming close to weighing a pound in the next 2 or 3 weeks, I can see why he or she's kicks pack a little more punch than they did two weeks ago. It's really amazing though, especially when I'm not feeling so great myself, to feel baby moving around like crazy and having a good old time in there.
As for me, I feel pretty great every day, which I am so, so thankful for! Last night I made the mistake of not eating any snacks after dinner, which resulted in waking up super early because I was hungry, then not being able to fall back asleep, and well, you see how this is going... I am extremely blessed to work somewhere with flexible hours, so if I have to leave early one day because I don't feel so great, I can make up those hours later. A day doesn't pass by that I don't give thanks to God for having His hand all over writing this chapter of our lives, in knowing exactly where He wanted us to be, work and otherwise, before blessing us with a child :)
Looking to the week ahead, nothing too exciting going on. BUT, two short weeks from today, I'll be happy to make this weekly post with an announcement of pink OR blue!

Happy Birthday Mike!

Love you baby! Glad you enjoyed your birthday cheesecake :)

(Almost) Halfway!

Took a belly shot today. Mainly because I made the effort to blow dry my hair for the first time in ages and knew it wouldn't be happening again any time soon. So here's my halfway through pregnancy, 20 weeks (minus 2 days) belly shot :)

I realized later that this is the same shirt I was wearing for my "starter" pic at the beginning of my pregnancy. Check it out here :)

"If it doesn't run from you, you better run from it!"

Last night our dog got skunked. Yes, skunked. We were hanging out at about 10pm watching a decent movie and let the dog out for the last time of the night. Five minutes later I opened the door to let her in and smelled skunk. Called for her (because I didn't want her to smell like skunk) and she comes sulking towards the door with her tail between her legs. Needless to say, neither Mike nor I expected to spend our Saturday night de-skunking the dog. I walked outside as the bath was almost over and heard Mike saying to Bear, "Lesson learned Bear. If it doesn't run from you, you better run from it!"

Bath #1- last night. Doesn't she look like she's having a good time?

Bath #2- this afternoon. Tried to make it a little more enjoyable for all by pulling out the kiddie pool so she could splash around afterwards. And I could dip in my feet.

Bump alert

Until the last four days, no strangers had commented on my ever-growing belly, assuming I was pregnant. However, I got my first "Congratulations! When are you due?" on Wednesday and have had three more strangers make similar comments since then. Do I just exude pregnant-ness now, or is my child making its presence well known... don't know. But it sure is pretty fun!

***Note: I shared this with Mike today (he was with me for the most recent comment) and our convo led me to realize all of these comments have been from women. Mike says guys "just don't go there" unless they're absolutely certain and "even then" have some reservations. Good to know :)

Reaching Out

For much of the last year, my women's small group has been going to serve a meal and provide childcare during a bible study at Restoration Urban Ministries here in Champaign. RUM is a transitional housing facility, so a lot of times, people move in to RUM when they don't have anywhere else to go. They've got great programs to help their residents find jobs and childcare, helping them learn to manage their money, all while offering bible studies and church services among many other services, throughout the week.

This month was especially special for our group because we planned a large cookout to celebrate the summer and partnered up with a couple other groups at our church to make it happen. Despite the rain, about 60 people were served a great meal and we had a great time sharing a little bit of God's love through a plate of food :) I didn't get any great pictures of our whole group but there's one with some of the women below.

Our very kind grillmaster, Eddie, and his helpers that showed up to keep him company. Eddie is a pro at cooking out for things like this, as he takes groups out to grill hot dogs to pass out to the homeless at least once a week, sometimes twice. We were so thankful he took care of all the grilling for us!

So many choices! This boy was browsing the food selection before making his plate.

19 week update

19 week update today! I write my weekly update rocking in my glider, my new favorite place to hang and put my feet up. It's been a great week and I'm excited to reach the "halfway point" next week when I do this update. I've been feeling really great, just a little limited in some of my normal, around the house things. Most recently, I was playing the ball game with the dog, and we have her well trained to drop the ball on the ground near us. Turns out bending over to pick something up off the floor every 10 seconds isn't too easy. So then I moved to sit on the floor so I wouldn't have to reach for it... and she proceeds to playfully bark at me over and over and over (Mike can picture what I'm talking ab0ut).

I had a pregnancy massage yesterday, which was absolutely great. It was a little weird not being able to just lay down on your belly and put your face in the cut out part of the table, but it was very comfortable. The woman who did my massage knew just how to set me up with pillows to get me comfy, and that's exactly how I slept last night since it worked so well!

As far as baby, Baby C has been kicking a whole lot this past week. I've been feeling the baby flutter for weeks now but those kicks are definitely getting harder. I told Mike it won't be much longer until he's able to feel the kicks by touching my belly; they're still too flutter-y to feel from the outside. A surefire way to perk the baby up is to take a few bites of ice cream, or even yogurt as I noticed at work yesterday. Nothing like giving your unborn child a sugar rush...

I've been having fun looking at nursery ideas online. I'm leaning towards doing something cute with zoo animals in the nursery. Mike and I really enjoy visiting different zoos when we happen to have the chance, and I'm sure this little one will make the rounds to the Chicago, Indy and St Louis zoos early on in life :) Check out my favorites so far in the pics below (first for a girl, then for a boy).

Lovely Saturday

My day started off quite early today, at 5:45. The funny thing is when you've already had 8 1/2 hours of sleep at that point and you haven't eaten since dinner the night before, you're not really upset that you're getting up that early. After all, I was getting up to eat first breakfast and start my day.

Then I headed out to hit a couple of garage sales and see if I could find any deals. A couple weeks ago I found a bunch of great stuff and happily brought it home, washed it and set it in the nursery. I understand why people like garage sale-ing now- its fun to be on a mission for something and feel a sense of success when you walk away, mission accomplished! Before I post this picture, I will make the disclaimer that I strayed from buying just neutral clothes and scooping up some boy AND girl specific clothes that were in great shape and really cheap. So don't see the pink and think I know I'm having a girl or something :) We just figure we'll give whatever we don't use away to someone we may know that could put it to good use.

One of the things I scooped up today was something that instantly made me think of Baby C's Aunt Daria. So someday he or she will be able to wear this to visit his or her aunt and uncle... probably more of a boy outfit than a girl but oh well.

Then my morning finished by coming home to have second breakfast with my hubby. One of the foods I've had a taste for lately (or "craving", if you will) is french toast. And as I sat in my chiropractor's office yesterday reading the Food Network magazine, I came across their recipe for perfect french toast. Came home and found it again online and decided I had to have it this morning. It tasted as good as it looks!

Gliding away...

Thanks, Mom and Dad, for this awesome gift! Our new glider arrived at the house today, and my fabulous husband sat down to put it together before we even ate dinner :) This is intended for the nursery but we're going to keep it downstairs for me to enjoy until baby comes.
I'm gliding away as I type... love you guys, and thanks again!

Last Saturday, Jessica and I visited the Paint your own Pottery store in Champaign. Jessica and I first met in a school-based mentoring program almost 4 years ago, right after she started 4th grade. Now, we've been in Big Brothers Big Sisters for about 2 years and she's getting ready for 8th grade. Usually we do some un-exciting things like have dinner at my house, meet up for a walk or play Uno or some Wii. However, we've talked about going to PYOP for awhile, and we finally found a good day to go!

I busied myself working on a piggy bank for baby while she worked on a penguin bank (or a "pengy bank" as Mike later called it) for the afternoon. Three days later, I went to pick up our pieces after they were fired. I cannot wait to go back to paint some more very, very soon!

today's midwife appt

Great check-up with the midwife first thing this morning! It's so nice getting the early morning appointment when there's a decreased chance they'll be behind. Note to self to try to get more of those in the future... baby is doing well, growing as it should. It kept squirming away while she tried to get a good read on the heartbeat- we'd hear it for a quick second and then it'd be gone. Finally she got a good read on it, 145 bpm.

I was also concerned about if I was gaining too much weight going into the appt, but turns out I'm only plus 9 pounds since the pregnancy began, which she said was just great. I haven't been able to walk much at all this past month with the heat (though I've had a few visits to the pool to swim some leisurely laps) and I know I've been eating an awful lot. Oh well, she says to keep it up!

NOW we can start the countdown til the next appt, or "boy or girl day" as I noticed its called in Mike's calendar.

18 weeks

So I just took a picture of myself this morning and just uploaded it to the computer and had to ask is that REALLY me?! I feel like I've been growing a lot lately but yikes, not THAT much! I guess I also don't walk around hugging my belly in front of a mirror every day either, but, anyways... without further ado, my latest belly shot at just over 18 weeks...

I still get people that seem to be guessing whether or not I'm actually pregnant so it must not be totally apparent to a stranger on the street... but its apparent to me! I'm feeling great overall lately, with the exception of still being so sensitive to the heat. I'm just trying to stay as cool as possible as much as I can. I'm also eating quite a bit more, and have been "craving" some things that are really not very good for me at all (a McDonalds cheeseburger and fries sounded a whole lot better than my turkey sandwich, chips and grapes today). So far I'm trying to avoid giving in to those really bad cravings, but some things (like ice cream) are just so perfect for the summer.

This week baby is the size of a... sweet potato?! I can't think of a less-cute food to compare baby to (ok, maybe I can, I just don't want to). The baby has been moving a whole lot this past week. Last night I was feeling a bit overheated, and despite my discomfort, the baby was moving so much that I could barely focus on driving on the way home (but I did). My weekly pregnancy email didn't fail to remind me that baby's gender is now apparent on an ultrasound... even though ours is going to be here soon, waiting another 4 weeks (or 27 days, who is counting) seems like a ways off still!

I'm starting to get some fun nursery ideas, both boy and girl ideas. Mike's looking forward to starting to paint once we decide what we want to do in there, and I'm looking forward to letting him have at it :) Maybe I'll post some ideas up soon once I organize myself a little bit more.

Heating up

It's no secret that pregnant women tend to be affected by the heat in the summer. But from what I hear, everybody's different. But I am seriously impressed by my pregnant friends who are 7, 8 or 9 months pregnant during this heat, and how they're actually able to keep doing things because all I feel like doing is chilling (literally) in the air conditioner and maybe floating around the lazy river for an hour or so.

But last week or so, Mike started to complain that I am "radiating" heat and said he understood the phrase "bun in the oven" now, since I'm putting out as much heat as an oven (or something to that effect). At first I thought he was exaggerating, but then on Wednesday at small group, one of the other women in group was sitting next to me on the couch and moved to the floor about 15 minutes into group, because "no offense, but its just too hot sitting next to you!" Finally at work yesterday, I effectively froze my two office-mates out of our office by asking if we could keep the vent fully open. I did, however, tell them they could close it off towards the end of the day when one of them kept going outside to "warm up". That same person came in with a hooded jacket today, on a day when the temp is expected to creep up to 90 again...

But Baby, don't think for a second that I'm not loving every minute of this! Can't wait to find out if you're a boy or girl and what your name is in just about 30 days!

17 week update

Week 17 is here! It's been a really busy week and I haven't had much of a chance to blog. Mike and I both had some extra time off this past weekend around the 4th of July and we enjoyed a super long weekend together, including 2 days in Chicago. On Sunday (July 4th), Mom and Dad grilled out and let us invite anyone over for dinner. We got to see Andy and Daria, fresh back from their trip to Italy. Nat and Joe came over right after the Cubs game to visit for awhile, and Mike's good friend Ed came over with his whole family. I wish I would have taken some pictures of Ed and Blanca's kids with Lucy, Maggie and Chez- by the end of the night they were all best friends! Isabella was even reading books to Lucy, while Lucy hid under the covers from the fireworks. It was very, very sweet :)

Then on Monday, we headed out to Arlington Park for a day at the races. Even though we were sitting completely in the shade, I still somehow got sunburned after about 4 hours out there. We had a great time watching the races and placing Mike's $0.10 wagers on the different races.

Finally on Tuesday, we had originally planned to do something fun and Chicago-y, like go to Lincoln Park Zoo or something else downtown. However, sweltering heat and a couple of sunburns from the day before limited us to just a quick visit to the nearby Babies R Us store to play with strollers and play yards and anything else we wanted to check out in person. I told Mike he should be glad we don't have one of those stores nearby because I think I'd be visiting it very, very often :)

This was our favorite stroller. I've been leaning towards the Chicco brand for its great reviews for durability, safety and versatility. We thought this pattern was pretty fun too, and it could work for a boy or girl.
