summer is here!

I absolutely love summer time for lots of reasons, one of which is spending time at the pool! Tonight, our friends and neighbors invited us down to check out their fun new pool they set up last week and Troy got his first dip in a pool. It was plenty big enough for two moms and two babies...the dads hung out on the "pool deck" while we splashed around. Thanks, Page fam, for sharing your awesome pool with us!

Troy was cracking us up while he chilled out on the raft with his arms all sprawled out.

like father, like son

Troy was lounging with Mike today and just started staring up at the ceiling. Not the fan or anything, but the ceiling. Wondering what all the fuss was about, Mike began to stare as well.

more photos from photo shoot

Here are some additional photos from our photo shoot over Mother's Day weekend, now that all our photos are done. (See the first preview here.)

back to jumping

Poor Troy had a bit of an upset stomach the other night and I got the honor of learning the difference between spitting up and throwing up :( However, after a day long break from the jumperoo, he was happy to get a little time in there last night. I didn't think he needed any vigorous baby exercise until I was sure he was on the mend!

sidenote: Yes my child was dressed in long sleeves and sweats yesterday. And today he was stripped down to a onesie for bed. This weather has been crazy!

Troy and I visited with my friend Michelle the other day and her daughter, Madelynn, was eager to show off all her cool toys to Troy. Here she is demonstrating the "popcorn popper" as Michelle called it. Troy learned how to make the balls pop very quickly! Thanks, Madelynn, for sharing your toys so well!

waking up

I took the video camera in with me when Troy was waking up this morning to catch our first "conversation" of the day. Typical video disclaimer: this probably won't be entertaining to you unless you're a grandparent or great-grandparent to Troy!

one happy kid

baby's first...tornado siren?

Here we are, hanging in the basement while the sirens went off tonight. Troy wasn't bothered at all; its just as easy to nurse in the basement as it is anywhere else...nothing else needed!

I've said for a long time our kids were inevitably going to be covered in slobber. Its just a fact if you have a good, affectionate dog. We've done really well about monitoring most of Troy and Bear's interactions these past almost 6 (wow!) months and Bear has mostly left Troy alone if he's been laying on the floor.

Not any more.

Troy now giggles at Bear as she walks by and their interactions have been more and more entertaining. Non-dog owners (and possibly some people who do have dogs) may be grossed out by the following picture but I think its pretty funny! For the record, Troy was squealing with delight.

evening playtime

Troy and I spent some time Tuesday evening at a friend's house. Troy enjoyed watching the two older kids run around and play with different toys, but he really liked hanging out on the floor with baby Eydie, who is just a few months older than him, and one of the many babies from church born last year. It's going to be so fun to see all these babies grow up together!

These days, when I get ready in the mornings, I let Troy play on the floor in his room. I lay him down, and he doesn't roll consistently so he's not going anywhere :) It's awesome. I can hear him playing in there and talking to himself and it keeps him way happier than being confined to his bouncer (where I put him when I shower, so I can hear him). I went in to get him ready this morning and found this scene. How nice to take a snooze in the sun! And how nice for me to let him do this for a short time longer until he starts to get in to things :)

I think that is one mighty cute baby!

(insert apology)

My husband just informed me that I posted the un-edited version of the Captain Jack Sparrow song. Oops. I didn't listen to it before posting. Sorry if I offended you. I didn't even know such a version existed! (hangs head in shame)

family visit may 21

Troy's Gramma and Grampa were itching for a visit after not seeing Troy for several weeks, and today turned out to be the perfect day for them to visit. We had a good lunch at Milo's restaurant in Urbana, visited a few stores and picked up ice cream at Marble Slab (yum!) And of course, my parents spent a lot of time getting smiles and giggles from Troy!

Troy couldn't stop staring at Grampa and trying to grab his glasses

Thanks for my new teether, Gramma!

girls night

drinks at boltini lounge in downtown champaign
Now that summer is here, its wedding season! And I am just so excited for my friend Alyssa to walk down the aisle in August. I can vividly remember the night she came to small group and shyly mentioned Nate for the first time :) It's been such an honor to see their relationship go from talking to dating to engagement and wedding planning, literally one week at a time. We had such a fun girls night last night to celebrate her upcoming marriage...thanks for giving us a reason to celebrate, Alyssa, and can't wait for your wedding!

the doppelganger

We like to think our dog is one of a kind. Not only is she a special breed ("whatever you think she is" breed) but she's got tons of fun quirks that just make her who she is. Yesterday Mike stumbled across this picture and we found her long-lost twin! We love you, Bear!

bath time got a little messier

A few weeks ago I let Troy hang in the big bath and we've been doing it ever since. This past week he's found out how to make a splash. Literally. The video ends with me having to replug the drain since he kicked it open. When he did this while Mike was watching him the other night, Mike thought Troy was trying to say he was all done :) Not so, if you haven't been soaped up yet, Troy!

more food!

I picked up some trays (glorified ice cube trays) to store my purees yesterday and the baby food making commenced! Yes, I'm already a pretty busy woman but I do love cooking and spending time in the kitchen and have been very excited to make baby food :) Plus, I've found it *so easy* (like the box says) to make a batch of food up while I'm already in the kitchen making dinner or cleaning up. Above are bananas in the trays and sweet potatoes ready to be stored.

This is the kind of look I get when I plop Troy in his highchair in the evening. Clearly he's enjoying this new experience :)
What's on the menu tonight, Mom?
Sweet potatoes are well received
I didn't even realize he was licking his lips as I took this picture once we were done. This kid cracks me up!

down on the farm

We just joined a buying club for meat from a local farmer, Triple S Farms. So far we're really impressed with the quality of meat and the price is barely more than we'd pay in the grocery story. And for getting fresh, free-range, vegetarian-fed, organic products, we're glad to support them! We haven't bought any poultry products yet, because they do seem to be a bit more expensive than what we'd get at the store, but we've bought beef and pork. We get 20% off the regular prices being a part of the buying club and pick it up at the farmer's market in urbana.

Sound good to you? If you join the buying club and tell farmer Stan we referred you, we'll get some free meat! Woot! Let me know if you're interested.

poker night!

Yep, that's candy and playing cards on the same table!

When some of our friends and neighbors found out Mike used to be a pro poker played, we decided one of our next game nights had to be a poker-playing lesson. I myself have never learned how to really play poker so it was a good chance to learn from my hubby. Then we took it a step further and decided to play for candy, just to add a fun (and sweet!) twist. We played for several hours and stayed up way later than we normally do. Then at around midnight, all three of the boys were up at the same time to join in the party. The looks on their faces as they watched the table of candy were priceless! Thanks for the fun night, everybody!

previews from photo session

Thanks to Daria, Andy, Mom and Dad, we were gifted with this photography session back at Christmas. We were finally able to cash it in over Mother's Day weekend. It was beautiful out and we went to the Arboretum at U of I, the same place we took our wedding pictures. I look forward to many more photo sessions out there as the years go by!

Troy wasn't too generous with his ear to ear grins, but based on our previews, we're going to have some adorable new photos of him as well as all three of us. Enjoy the previews..more to come! And thanks again for the gift!

may 12 movie

Well it appears due to Blogger's issues, this post was somehow deleted. But now it is back. You can now resume watching Troy drool, stick out his tongue and flop/roll to your heart's desire :)

5 months old

Troy is 5 months old today! I can hardly believe it, how big he is and how quick his first year is flying by. Let's slow down a little bit, yeah buddy? Okay, good. Here's the "official" 5 month picture from this morning. 80 degrees and sunny today so he got to wear some of his summery 6-9 month old clothes :) Many wise people, including my own mother, have told me to enjoy every age that Troy is at, so that you're not looking ahead too much or wishing you could go back to another age. I can honestly say that this past month was my favorite so far, and I look forward to saying the same thing in the many months and years to come!

Eating: Troy is (still) a great eater. He eats a lot in the morning and a lot in the evening, but has spaced out his feedings during the day a little, sometimes going 3 1/2-4 hrs between meals, which has me pumping less frequently when I'm away from him. As I blogged earlier, we did try some rice cereal this month. I was giving it to him about 50% of the time in the evenings for 2-3 weeks. During this time, his sleep got thrown off a bit though and he really didn't seem to like the cereal much, moreso just tolerating it. Its been almost a week since he has had any and he's been getting his sleep cycles back to what they were before. I think we're going to wait a few more weeks to try solids again, and start right in on veggies and fruits.

Sleeping: Troy takes 2 good naps and a third catnap in the evening these days. I am able to get so much done during his naps its awesome...and I'm very thankful for this! My work-from-home days wouldn't go anywhere near as well if he was a short napper. He goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 and sleeps until about 7am. He has been getting up once or twice a night this month, and this last week his first stretch has gone back to about 7-8 hours most nights, which is what it was last month. Apparently he likes to spend some time awake after his feeding some nights too. Last night he happily cooed in his crib so loudly after his feeding that Mike woke up and heard him babbling.

Playing: Troy grabs onto things more now. He loves grapsing things with both hands and holding on tight. He also is reaching out to touch EVERYTHING, including our faces, which I think is awfully cute :) He's just very curious about things. He absolutely loves the jumperoo, and this has quickly turned into my "must-have" baby gear item. He's learning lots of new things, too. Check out this photo of his figuring out he can grab the mobile on his swing.

Clothes: He's wearing a combo of 6-9 month clothes and a few random 3-6 month ones. We also got our first delivery of size 3 diapers from Amazon this weekend, so we're finishing up 2s and starting to use those.

Likes: Sticking his tongue out. Baths. Being outside. Jumping in the jumperoo.

Dislikes: Burping. Still. Some things just don't change.

New things he's doing: Chewing on cold teething objects. Practicing sitting up. Trying to roll from back to belly, hasn't done it yet though.

Cute things he's doing: Reaching his arms out when he wants to be picked up. "Nursing naps" as I've been calling them, while he catnaps in the evening and we get some snuggles.

Okay. Mike has cut me off and said I've written enough. Its just so hard to stop...I love writing about this little guy! Happy 5 months, Troy!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mommas reading this blog. Obviously this day carries some extra significance for me this year as opposed to years past. I was searching for an old photo of me and my own mom to post today but I don't have any :( Really need to search through old family photos next time I'm up, Mom! So I'll post this lovely and recent picture of me with my Mom and Gramma instead :)

As for my day today, it was a great complement to mother's day observed yesterday. While Mike was gone in Indy for the day, Troy and I spent some sweet time together. We had some great snuggles while he took his long nap this afternoon and I just didn't want to move him into his crib. (The photo below was taken right after I put him down after an hour or so of snuggles.) As he was laying next to me sleeping I'm not going to lie, I got a bit teary-eyed thinking about how much this precious baby boy has changed my life for the better. I am so, so blessed to be a mom and today was a really great time to reflect on that :)

mother's day observed

Since Mike has to be out of town for a few hours tomorrow morning and afternoon, I was told we'd be celebrating Mother's Day tonight. Little did I know, all day was going to be Mother's Day Observed in the Cunningham house! Troy and I came home from the market to a sweet card, beautiful roses, a clean house and a fun new kitchen gadget, the pizazz, which we proceeded to cook our lunch with later.

Troy made me my first mother's day creation at Gwynne's earlier this week, with only minimal help and direction of course :) Apparently there's two hands and a fist on this picture as the roses. It's hanging proudly on our fridge now.

After an afternoon full of errands, and assorted tasks around the house, we headed out to mother's day dinner. Mike made a reservation for us at Biaggi's, a restaurant we only really go to for special occassions. We were glad we had reservations when we showed up and it was prom night! It made us wonder for a moment what its going to be like to send Troy off to prom someday.. a long ways away, thankfully!

Thanks for making my first Mother's Day special, Mike and Troy!!
